However, a growing number of experts from different fields, ranging from psychologists to leadership consultants, are challenging that belief and believes it is Emotional Intelligence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Instead of IQ,\nthis body of experts says that emotional intelligence, or EQ, dictates whether\na person would be successful or not.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not to say that IQ doesn&#8217;t mean anything.\nPeople who possess high IQs perform well, especially in the academe. But the\nmain problem with IQ is that often, it is too narrow and excludes other fields\nof intelligence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what exactly does EQ mean, especially in the\ncontext of the workplace?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Defining EQ<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Harvard psychologist and theorist Howard Gardner\ndefines emotional intelligence as <em>&#8220;&#8230;your\nability to understand other people, what motivates them and how to work\ncooperatively with them.&#8221;<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EQ has five categories, namely: <strong>self-awareness, self-regulation,\nmotivation, empathy, and social skills<\/strong>. Here&#8217;s a brief overview of each. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Self-awareness<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Self-awareness is the ability to recognize your\nemotions at the moment. It comprises two key elements: emotional awareness and\nself-confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Self-regulation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Self-regulation is the ability to control one&#8217;s\nnegative emotions like anger or anxiety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Motivation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Motivation is the ability to push yourself to\nachieve the goals that you have set for yourself while maintaining a positive\nattitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Empathy<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Empathy is the ability to acknowledge the\nimportance of other people in helping you achieve your goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Social\nskills<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Social skills refer to different interpersonal\nskills that are crucial for furthering one&#8217;s career. These include\ncommunication, leadership, conflict management, teamwork, and networking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What&#8217;s the difference\nbetween IQ and EQ?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the past, IQ was determined by dividing a\nperson&#8217;s mental age over his chronological age. Today, many IQ tests compare a\nperson&#8217;s score against the average score of other people within his age group. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IQ encompasses different abilities, including\nfluid reasoning, quantitative reasoning, working, and short-term memory, and\nvisual and spatial processing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EQ, on the other hand, encompasses abilities like\nidentifying one&#8217;s emotions, recognizing other people&#8217;s feelings, controlling\none&#8217;s emotions, and being able to relate to other people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Compared to IQ, EQ is a relatively new concept\nthat has recently gained traction among the broader public. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what&#8217;s the reason behind the buzz about EQ? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before EQ entered the public consciousness,\npeople, including experts, believed that IQ is the key to a person&#8217;s success.\nBut later on, critics of IQ theorized that there was <strong>more to success than having a high IQ.<\/strong> Other areas of knowledge and\nabilities need to be considered. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is particularly true in the workplace, where\none needs to take into account a person&#8217;s interaction with the people in his\nenvironment. <strong>This is why people with\naverage IQs can outperform those with above-average IQs.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From a personal standpoint, having high emotional\nintelligence translates into better physical and mental health. People with\nhigh EQ are also remarkable leaders who know how to effectively cultivate and\nmanage relationships as well as bring conflicts to an acceptable resolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>EQ in the workplace<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The workplace is a relational environment. Quite\nsimply, you will encounter people who have different sets of values, skills,\npersonalities, and emotions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within the workplace, every interaction,\ndecision, and action has a ripple effect on you and your team. And having high\nemotional intelligence allows you and your team to tackle challenges more\neffectively and more fluidly. In contrast, having low emotional intelligence\ncan translate to negative emotions and actions like frustration, lack of motivation,\nand bullying. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or to put it succinctly, teams with low EQ tend\nto be rigid and resistant to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Building high EQ\nteams<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before creating a high EQ team, it is critical\nfor each member to work on their emotional intelligence skills, especially in\nterms of self and social awareness, emotional management, communication, and\nconflict resolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, there are a few strategies that\nyou can try to build an emotionally intelligent team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Find\na leader<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A good leader is a vital piece of every\nemotionally intelligent. Such a person possesses a few key traits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For starters, they are respectful and treat every\nteam member with utmost courtesy. Second, these people readily embrace change,\nknowing that it paves the way for growth. They also know how to solicit\nfeedback from each member of the team and acknowledge their own mistakes. And\nfinally, and probably most important of all, they are <strong>ready to extend a helping hand<\/strong> to anyone in need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exceptional leadership skills rarely come\nnaturally to people. However, there are programs focused on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rei.ae\/course\/level-2-award-certificate-leadership-team-skills\/\">leadership\ntraining in the UAE<\/a> (or wherever you may be) that people with potential can attend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Know\neach member&#8217;s strengths and weaknesses<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Every member of your team brings unique things to\nthe table, and if you want to draw out the best from each one, you should take\nthe time to know them individually. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look beyond each team member&#8217;s job title and\nprovide them with opportunities for creativity and innovation. And on the\nconverse side of the coin, provide objective feedback when mistakes are made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Inspire<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you have highly emotionally intelligent\nmembers in your time, their energies will sag from time to time. There are a\nfew things that you can do to spark their passion and bring their energy levels\nup. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These include <strong>recognizing good work done, creating an engaging work environment, and\nsetting a company mission<\/strong> that everyone can get behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Manage\nstress<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Stress does not only undermine your team members&#8217;\nhealth and wellbeing. It can drastically affect the team&#8217;s overall performance.\nThis is why it is critical for organizations to find ways to manage stress\neffectively. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the strategies that you can use include\nsetting (and sticking) to established schedules, allowing team members to take\nbreaks, discouraging multitasking, and just being empathic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Develop\ncommunication skills<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Strong communication skills create synergy and\nhelp teams run more efficiently. Apart from investing in training for the\ndevelopment of effective communication skills, you should encourage every team\nmember to speak positively and constructively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>EQ can be learned<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, there is no definitive test that\nwill help companies find out if a candidate has high emotional intelligence.\nAlthough there are a few tests that can give hiring professionals some insights\non the EQ of a job applicant, much needs to be demonstrated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, on the other end of the spectrum, EQ is\nnot set in stone. It can be developed to a high level, although it would\nrequire time and patience.
